Olga E. Hervis, MSW, LCSW

Founder & Director

 Olga E. Hervis, M.S.W., L.C.S.W. is the co-author and developer of Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) ©™ and Family Effectiveness Therapy (FET). BSFT is a nationally recognized-award winning, evidence-based, effective and practical approach to reducing problem behaviors, eliminating substance avuse risk factors, and strengthening families. These models were initially developed under the auspices of the University of Miami Center for Family Studies, which Ms. Hervis co-founded in 1974. While with the Center, she conducted research, developed the therapeutic models, and designed training programs for clinicians. In 2003, she founded the Family Therapy Training Institute of South Florida as a private effort to disseminate the models and clinical findings of 35 years of research and practice in this field.

 She holds a Master's degree from Barry University in Miami, Florida and has done post-graduate training in New York, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Florida, where she is an Approved Supervisor for marriage and family therapy, mental health counseling, and clinical social work. She is also a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy; a Diplomate of the National Board of Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists; Certified Criminal Justice Specialist, National Association of Forensic Counselors; and a Master Addictions Counselor, National Association of Forensic Counselors.  She has won numerous awards for BSFT, including 2000 Exemplary Model in Substance Abuse Prevention Award by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in Washington, DC. Family Effectiveness Training, as developed by Szapocznik, Hervis and colleagues was also selected as the winner of the 2000 Exemplary Model in Substance Abuse Prevention Award by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Silvia M. Kaminsky, M.S.Ed., LMFT, CAP

Master Trainer and Supervisor

Silvia M. Kaminsky, M.S.Ed., LMFT, CAP, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Addictions Professional in the State of Florida, as well as a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist with the National Board of Certified Clinical Hypnotherapy. She holds a BA in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and a M.S.Ed. In Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. She has 18 years of clinical experience, the past 14 years in private practice in South Miami, Florida. Ms. Kaminsky has worked as a clinical supervisor in both agency settings and her private practice for the past 14 years. She is a Qualified Supervisor in Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling in the State of Florida. Ms. Kaminsky has trained with Olga Hervis at the Center for Family Studies at the University of Miami's Department of Psychiatry over the past 17 years and is a Certified Brief Strategic Family Therapist (BSFT) as well as a BSFT Certified Trainer and Supervisor.

In addition to Ms. Kaminsky's clinical and supervisory background, Ms. Kaminsky has been involved in the leadership of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), having served as both the President of the Miami-Dade Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Florida Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. As part of her involvement with AAMFT and FAMFT, Ms. Kaminsky has lobbied on a state and national level regarding issues and legislature which impacts the practice of marriage and family therapy and the mental health care of clients. Ms. Kaminsky has presented in conferences and workshops on a local, state and national level on topics in the areas of marriage and family therapy, HIV, addictions and legal/ethical issues.

 

Jorge Pena, Ph.D.

BSFT Supervisor and Trainer

Jorge L. Pena, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and a Certified BSFT Supervisor with the Family Therapy Institute of Miami. He received his doctorate from the University of Portland in Oregon. His teaching experience includes universities and colleges in both the USA and abroad, including eight years as a faculty member at Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, in Salamanca, Spain. He has held clinical positions with both public and private agencies and currently conducts evaluations for juvenile courts in Florida. His professional expertise includes development, coordination and supervision of clinical intervention programs; teaching and research in the areas of environmental psychology, clinical applications of social learning theory; family interventions and cultural differences; clinical assessment and differential diagnosis; and developmental disorders.

 

Kathleen A. Shea, Ph.D.

Administrator 

Kathleen Shea, Ph.D. is Administrator for the Family Therapy Training Institute of Miami. She holds a doctorate from the University of Miami in Higher Education Administration, and a Master's in counseling from the University of Dayton (Ohio). Dr. Shea's experience includes university teaching, research, and administration; healthcare marketing; project management; and consulting. She has consulted with educational and human service organizations on organization development, assessment, and evaluation projects.   She has special interest in organization development from a structural-functional point of view.   She is a former Vice President of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), and served on the board of directors for National Small Business United (NSBU). She is a founder of the Women's Fund of Miami-Dade County, and the Community Coalition for Women’s History. She served on the City of Miami Commission on the Status of Women, as well as on the boards of the Economic Opportunity Family Health Center, the South Florida Medical Foundation, and the AvMed Member Council. She is currently the President and Florida Coordinator for Living Values: An Educational Program, Inc., a global character education program supported by UNESCO and Unicef.
